UW-La Crosse faculty are known for inspiring students inside the classroom. But their actual impact extends much further.

Many UWL faculty also serve as academic advisors. They help students plan and pursue their educational goals, setting them up for success in their lives and careers.

To celebrate academic advisors and the critical but often unseen work they do on campus, UWL created the Eagle Excellence in Academic Advising Award in 2020. This year’s recipient is Noel Wilbur, associate teaching professor of accountancy.

Noel Wilbur, Accountancy

Started at UWL: 2018; returned in 2023

Courses: I currently teach Intermediate Accounting I and Principles of Managerial Accounting. I also have taught Fraud Examination and Accounting Information Systems at UWL.

Advising responsibilities: As IAS, I typically advise 30 to 40 students in an academic year, which includes meeting with my advisees for 30 minutes a semester to discuss the student’s course schedule, their progress through the program and their plans after graduation. I am also the accounting internship coordinator. As the accounting internship coordinator, I help students find internships, prepare for interviews, review resumes, and provide guidance on taking and passing the CPA exam.

Background: Prior to UWL, I worked as an accountant and analyst for two publicly traded companies in Iowa.

Favorite part of advising: This one is easy! I love seeing advisees grow and mature from students into professionals. We have a rigorous program, and each advisee will have to navigate the ups and downs that come with the degree. They don’t know it then, but that perseverance through difficult times is an employable trait industry wants and needs. It is fulfilling to know that when an advisee graduates and starts their career, they have an opportunity to control their own path and to make their own mark in their community.
